Q: What is a juice cleanse?

A: A juice cleanse or fast or detox, is a cleansing method where you only drink fresh juices for a certain period of time. A juice cleanse contains high quality, produce, preferably organic where possible. It is also known as a juice ‘feast’ as it provides such a vitamin and mineral rich boost.

Q: What are the benefits of juicing?

A: Juicing provides a massive nutritional boost. When the fibre is stripped away, it leaves the juice, full of vitamins and minerals. When you juice, you give your digestive system a break from constantly digesting, breaking down food and processing food. It helps to clear out toxins, impacted and putrefying fecal matter and helps to encourage beneficial bacteria to flourish

Q: Is it hard?

A: This question needs to be divided into three parts.

1). What is your purpose for juicing?
2). What results are you after?
3. Define ‘hard’.

When you set clear goals for your juice fast, when you are clear on the result you want to achieve, juicing is easier. If you go into a juice fast because everyone else does it, or you feel you ‘should’ or you read about it in a magazine or in a group somewhere but have no real intentions or goals for juicing, then it can be a challenging process.

Q: Do I have to do the enemas?

A: Yes! Especially if you are juicing longer than three days. If you don’t do the enemas, you will end up recycling all the toxic waste back into your body, especially back into the fatty organs such as your brain, and it will defeat the purpose of the juice.

 

Q: What can I expect to experience?

A: A major benefit to juicing is extra energy, clearer mind and less aches and pains. A lot of people report feeling lighter, especially in the stomach.

Q: Help! I’m having a ‘healing’ reaction. What can I do?

A: Around days 2-4, many people have various levels of detox reactions or healing reactions. Symptoms such as headaches, nausea, tiredness, diarrhoea, runny nose, breakouts on the forehead, cheeks or jawline/chin area. The best thing to do at this time, is a coffee enema as it helps to remove toxic waste from the hepatic (liver) portal duct. Also, if you are able to have a little nap, that will help immensely too.

Q: How long should I juice for?

A: The length of your juice cleanse will depend on your reasons for juicing in the first place. Look at the outcomes you wish to achieve. The current state of your body and health will also impact how long you feel able to juice for. A minimum of three days is a good start, with around 10 days being an ideal length of time to really detox, cleanse and renew the body. Please consult a Natural Health Practitioner, Naturopath or your preferred health professional for best advice that is specific to you.

A one day cleanse once a week or fortnight is a fantastic boost to your health. It will also help you get into the swing of fasting and cleansing.

Q: How do I prepare for a juice cleanse/fast?

A: It is recommended that you start cutting back foods such as sugars, breads, cakes, biscuits, meats, dairy and alcohol at least seven days prior to a cleanse. If you are able to, try to eliminate as many of these as you can entirely. Incorporate lots of fresh salads, smoothies, a juice a day, increase your pure water intake and reduce smoking or eliminate it if possible.

The purpose of a juice cleanse/fast is to support the body to detox, heal and renew. A juice cleanse/fast is not a quick fix. It is however, a supreme way to get in maximum nutrients, remove loads of toxins and support the body naturally.

Q: How to you go back to eating after a juice cleanse/fast?

A: It depends on how long you’ve fasted for. Anything less than three days, you can start the next day with a fruit smoothie or an avocado. A light salad for lunch and a light soup for dinner. Slowly add in light fresh meals for a couple more days and really look at the foods you reintroduce. Remember the reason why you juice fasted in the first place.

If you’ve juiced for longer, especially over 10 days, there is a certain protocol that needs to be followed to get the digestion working again. To just jump in and eat food will cause a shock to your digestion and can hamper it’s effectiveness. Soaked prunes are the best way to bring your digestion back online in a healthy supportive manner. Eat them slowly and drink the juice slowly. It should take you around 20 minutes to consume 20 soaked prunes. Do this for a couple days until your digestion comes back and then slowly bring in light soups, fruit smoothies, fresh fruit etc.
